This is probably the last 1991 Caprice 9C6 taxi in existence and is not a police car painted yellow.  Sold new at H.B. Chevrolet in Forest Hills, NY , it served in Manhattan until it was required to come off the street due to New York City's taxi age restrictions.  It was purchased from the original owner by a taxi collector and has been garaged since 1998 and has only been driven appoximately 4,000 miles since retirement and on nice days only . It is pretty much the way it came out of service with the massive NYC-only taxi bumper guard, meter, bulletproof partition, and roof light .  The body and chassis are in good condition and haven't been touched except for occasional maintenance . The LR door has two, minor dents . The air conditioning still has some Freon in it but needs some more for the AC to blow cold but everything is there and hooked up. The music radio works .  All the lights work.  The tires have good tread but are older. The cab drives well but there is a minor exhaust leak and a transmission tick that both go away when the cab warms up. The brakes have a minor bumping starting so they will need attention eventually . The driver's seat has minor split in the backrest and the glovebox door latch is broken . The meter and speedometer are wired to a toggle switch to prevent a battery drain when parked for long periods.  There is a Catwoman talking device but it's not working right now.  The roof turn signals work . The headlights , turn signals, horn , wipers, and tail lights work.  This cab passed the Ohio E check last fall . For what it is, this cab is in very good condition and it is highly doubtful that any more are still around from any city . For a Chevrolet fan, this is a car that you won't see at any Chevy show and is a unique, super easy restoration project.  The pictures speak for themselves.

Vert-A-Pac train cars kept your Chevy Vega's price in check

Fri, 01 Mar 2013

Our apologies to those who've seen this before, but for the rest of the class, how awesome are these pictures of the Vert-A-Pac shipping system General Motors came up with to ship the Chevrolet Vega back in the 1970s? Developed along with Southern Pacific Railroad, GM was able to double the amount of Vega models it could ship by packing them into the unique storage cars vertically.
At the time, rail cars could fit 15 vehicles each, but Chevrolet was able to lower shipping costs by making it possible to ship 30 Vegas per rail car, in turn allowing the price of the Vega to remain as low as possible. Each rail car had 30 doors that would fold down so that a Vega could be strapped on, and then a forklift would come along and lift the door into place. All the cars were positioned nose down, and since they were shipped with all of their required fluids, certain aspects had to be designed specifically for this type of shipping, including an oil baffle in the engine, a special battery and even a repositioned windshield washer reservoir. See for yourself in our image gallery above.

GM recalling over 243,000 crossovers over possible seat belt defect

2010 Buick Enclave - Click above for high-res image gallery
The summer of 2010's recall hit parade continues unabated today, with General Motors having just announced that it is asking 243,403 owners of its 2009-2010 Lambda crossovers to bring their three-row haulers in for inspection. The culprit? Second-row seat belts in select Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia, and Saturn Outlook CUVs have "failed to perform properly in a crash."
According to GM, a second-row seat-side trim piece is to blame, as it can impede the upward rotation of the buckle after the seat is folded flat. As a result, if the buckle makes contact with the seat frame, cosmetic damage can occur, potentially requiring additional force to operate the buckle properly. So far, no great shakes, but in the process of applying that additional force, the occupant may push the buckle cover down to the strap, potentially revealing and depressing the red release button. As a result of this, the belt may not latch, or in certain cases, it may actually appear to be latched when, in fact, it isn't.

Chevrolet planning low-cost Corvette under Stingray?

Wed, 27 Feb 2013

If you're burnt out on musings about the Chevrolet Corvette, you'll want to go ahead and skip this post. Motor Trend reports General Motors is hard at work on a low-cost version of the seventh-generation sports car for 2015. Rumored to be called the Corvette Coupe, the car will forgo the Stingray and skip the 450-horsepower 6.2-liter V8 engine in favor of a 5.3-liter V8 with under 400 ponies. If you're keeping track, that's a shade of the same engine found behind the headlights of the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra.
The report also suggests the Coupe will receive a number of aesthetic tweaks to separate it from the Stingray, including different front and rear fascias as well as new front fenders and a rear diffuser. Motor Trend says the point of all this is to cut the car's price tag, which means we may see a Corvette on showroom floors for less than $50,000 if this car comes to fruition.
