Mercury: Monterey La Carrera Pan Americana on 2040-cars
Mooresville, Indiana, United States
1954 Mercury Monterey Race Car - Authentic La Carrera Pan Americana Winner 1st Overall 1992 La Carrera Panamericana Mexico FIA historic marathon rally with drivers Dr. Peter Frank and Mark Williams. This 1954 Mercury Monterey has a very interesting history. As the story goes, Dr. Peter Frank was infatuated with the legendary race since visiting Mexico as a child on a family vacation. With his interest in vehicles and speed he decided to take this race on when it was revived by Loyal Truesdale and Eduardo Leon in 1985. This Mercury was located in 1989 and was taken to the same shop that had built the 1988 race-winning car for the La Carrera. Dr. Frank explained, “you need a battle-ax. You want to be sure your brakes, suspension and steering are top-notch. You want a strong engine. But since it’s a 2,000 mile race, you want to tend towards reliability rather than horsepower. The Mercury is a leaner, meaner Lincoln, slightly smaller, but you could still get that big engine in there.” It was built on a platform that included a 351-cid V-8 engine, automatic transmission, complete NASCAR-style brakes, upgraded suspension, full roll cage with a red and black exterior finish, along with the associated graphics from running, and winning the modern La Carrera Panamericana.

Report: Lincoln getting all of Mercury's ad dollars
Mon, 03 Jan 2011Now that the curtain has closed on Mercury, Ford Motor Company will redirect all of its marketing dollars for the oft-overlooked brand to the Blue Oval's luxury outpost, Lincoln. In speaking to Automotive News, the chairman of the Lincoln National Dealer Council, Bob Tasca, Jr., said, "You'll see a lot stronger presence in the advertising of Lincoln in 2011."
Lincoln spokesperson Christian Bokich reminded AN that the automaker is "preparing the way for seven new or significantly refreshed vehicles" that will be launched over the next four years, and the largest ad blitz in 2011 will focus on the refreshed MKX crossover, as well as the MKZ sedan and its hybrid counterpart. Following that, Lincoln has plans to launch a completely overhauled version of its Navigator SUV, an all-new C-segment vehicle and the overhauled 2013 MKZ, which Tasca says will be "strikingly different from its Ford Fusion sibling."

Thu, 24 Feb 2011Bugatti Veyron kit car - Click above for high-res image gallery
If you've got a pulse in your wrist and a snapping brain cell in your head, chances are you wouldn't mind parking a Bugatti Veyron in your garage. But for most mere mortals, scrounging up the cash for a physics-bending piece of 16-cylinder glory would require all sorts of unpalatable tasks. Fortunately for those who want to look the part without having to participate in human trafficking, the kit car universe has stepped in to save the day. All you need is a 1999-2002 Mercury Cougar, a boat load of fiberglass and a little patience.
Oh, and $89,000.
eBay Find of the Day: Craterface's '49 Mercury convertible from Grease
Wed, 29 Jan 2014Here is your chance to own your very own piece of greased lightning. Well, not the Greased Lighting, it's actually the black, flamed 1949 Mercury convertible that races against John Travolta in the classic 1978 movie Grease, and it's for auction on eBay Motors.
While it appeared in the film's exciting drag race in a Los Angeles storm drain, the hot rod was reportedly lost until last year, when the seller found it as a shell. He verified that it was the actual car with original builder, Eddie Paul, and sent the car for a complete restoration.
The auction includes original parts like the exhaust tips used in the movie and bent bumper from when it hit Travolta's car in the scene. The restorer recreated the scorpion stickers on the doors, razor hubcaps and license plate. He also installed a 1949 Mercury 255-cubic-inch (4.2-liter), flathead V8 and three-speed manual transmission with overdrive.
