The 997 4s really is a fantastic every day sports car with blistering, but usable performance, that is delivered through a raw and emotional driving experience. This is especially true when compared to the newer 991 that heralded the introduction of aids like PASM, electric steering, and, more recently turbos across the entire line. This carefully maintained example tops that off with upgrades that take that feeling to the next level. The 3.8L M97 howls at upper RPMs through the awesome sounding Speedtech exhaust that has to be heard. Its perfect - not too loud and not too quiet, zero drone, and presents the perfect balance between harmonic pitch and depth. This engine has fantastic character that subsequent DFI engines cant match. The combination of the OEM short-shift kit and the Numeric shift linkage cables have also resulted in rifle-bolt gear changes that slide into gear with a fantastic click. A complete list of upgrades includes:OEM 997 Short Shift kitOEM 997 GT3 RS Rear BumperOEM 997 Turbo wing with top blade delete (original wing available)OEM 997 Brake Light delete panel (with use of the Turbo wing brake light, original available)OEM lighted Carrera 4s door sillsOEM clear side markersOEM Spare tire kit and tools in the trunkOEM 997 Turbo shifter knobOEM Factory painted dashboard trim, door handles, door pull and shifter trimHeated seatsNumeric aluminum shifter cablesHRE P40SC - 19 with Michelin PS2 in stock sizes (2,000 miles on this package)BBS 18 winter wheels and Michelin Alpin tires (spacers included with sale)Titanium lug boltsSpeedtech center exit exhaust with 200 cell cats with matte carbon fiber tips (original exhaust parts front lipExtended leather door sills, center console, coin tray, and shifter trimDenison bluetooth music streaming and phone call Breakdown: The car needs nothing and has been maintained with an open checkbook. Any service and repair work was done as needed but other than the shifter cables (common 997 problem), the water pump (replaced as the pulley was looking tired), and the door locks (mechanism wouldnt lower the windows on one side but we decided to change both in case the other was going to go as well), the car has just needed regular 5k mile oil and filter changes. The only thing I havent tracked down is that the PCM will flicker or shut off for 10 mins or so about 2-3 times a year. As it comes back on pretty quickly, it hasnt bothered me too much. Otherwise, I am pretty obsessive about my cars so this 997 has received constant attention. Rear brakes are at around 15% so thats the next maintenance item. Notable maintenance history includes:Purchased at Porsche Springfield, MAAlways serviced at Porsche Westwood, MAAll maintenance records availableDoor locks and window mechanisms replaced at 55,000Water pump replaced at 57,00060,000 mile service completed in March 2016 including spark plug flushed and seals replaced at 61,000All records, books, and keys are available. Cosmetic Breakdown: The car is as close to perfect as you will find for a 997. The interior buttons and switches all work as they should with no visible discoloration common with this vintage. The windshield took a pebble that created a little nick in the glass 3 years ago. That pebble also left a 1-inch scratch on the front roof but its not very noticeable. Otherwise, the car has gotten regular details and washes and the paint shines very well. If you are looking for a 997, the car Total 911 magazine said is the best 911 generation ever with namesakes like the revered GT2 RS, GTS, or Speedster, this is one to seriously consider.

Porsche rolls out new 919 Hybrid at racing gala

Mon, 16 Dec 2013

That Porsche is returning to Le Mans next year with a top-tier LMP1 entry is no news - we've known that for some time. We've even seen pictures of the car in question undergoing testing at various racetracks across Europe, been told who'll be driving it and given some basic parameters of what will make it go. We just haven't known what to call it, but now we do.
In detailing its full endurance racing program for next year at its Night of Champions in Weissach, Porsche has revealed that its new LMP1 racecar will be called the 919 Hybrid. So, something like the 918 Spyder, only one faster. With a four-cylinder engine and a pair of electric motors, the 919 Hybrid will be taking on the top class at Le Mans next year, with a compelling roster of drivers on the docket: along with Mark Webber, Timo Bernhard, Romain Dumas and Neel Jani, Porsche has assigned its works driver Marc Lieb and F1 test driver Brendon Hartley to the effort. But that's not all Porsche has in store.
The factory is also supporting teams that will campaign the 911 RSR in the FIA World Endurance Championship as well as the United SportsCar Championship here in the US, taking Porsche off the pit wall and right in the race seat for next year as part of a comprehensive new racing program, details of which you can read in the press release below.

Can a Corvette really be compared to a 911 with options costing more than the Chevy?

Wed, 29 Jan 2014

In this latest video from Drive, Chris Harris asks straight away, "Can you still compare a base Corvette to a Porsche Carerra?" That's an particularly interesting question in this film, as the 911 in question is a 400-horsepower Carrera S model that's been fitted with $60,000 in options. Base price of a Corvette Stingray? $51,995. Harris' tester features an automatic and some other goodies that push it right up to that $60,000 range. So yes, the options on the Porsche cost as much as this entire 460-hp Chevrolet.
Harris stresses that this isn't a full review, but he does exercise both cars in a more composed manner before reverting to his traditionally exuberant driving style. The impressions are, as always, spot on, with Harris favoring the pointy nature and V8 power of the Stingray, while enjoying the gearbox (Porsche's exceptional PDK transmission) and just about everything else on the 911.
Take a look below for the latest video from Drive, and let us know if you agree with Mr. Harris' views on these two sports cars.

Preparing for Le Mans 2014 Porsche remembers 1971 and the 917 [w/video]

Sun, 07 Apr 2013

Porsche has given us another look back at its successes at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This time it's 1971, the year that its 917 set records that haven't all been eclipsed. It's 45-kilogram magnesium tube frame was the lightest, Jackie Oliver set the fastest in-race lap with a time that still stands, and winning drivers Helmut Marko - the same Helmut Marko currently with Infiniti Red Bull Racing - and Gilles Lethem did so many laps that their distance wasn't exceeded until the Audi R15 TDI did it in 2010.
1971 was also the year of the "Pink Pig." With bodywork created by a French aerodynamics firm, the wider, rounder 917 earned the porcine moniker so Porsche painted it pink and labeled it with the cuts you'd get from a pig. Sponsor Martini was so miffed they demanded all Martini branding be removed. No one can remove the thousands of photographs taken of the car ever since. Enjoy that and more in the video below.
