I know of is the car came to Oregon from California 15 to 20 years ago.
Was pulled behind an RV for a few years so it has wiring to plug into a trailer
socket on the back of the towing vehicle. Body work and paint had been done prior to coming to Oregon, this included replacing the right rear quarter panel where you can see from the photos the red is ever so slightly more pale. A couple small body patches were done more recently. Engine
is a later model Volkswagon 1600 cc engine based per engine number AE219021. Car VIN is 454414.
Drives good, smokes a little when first started after sitting then cleans up. I had the car inspected when buying it and they found that the engine compression was tested when I got it. Cylinders 1, 2, 3,
4 were 105, 110, 70, 70 cold respectively; and 140, 140, 110, 110 hot. The shop diagnosis was
cylinders may have been shimmed incorrectly. They also found that under the front where the steering mechanism connects they said that the rust should be addressed before driving the car hard, so I've driving it around but not hard cornering. I took photos from the front, under the front, to show this rust. Good things: Floor panels are solid. Fun to drive. Shifts well. 4 wheel disc brakes work well, 50% pads all around, based on shop inspection report. Spare tire is chrome plated steel. Lifting jack. Turn signals, head lights (one high beam out) work. Glass is in great shape (SEKURIT-F windows in all except driver’s window which is a SEKIRIT-1 with a heart shaped symbol. Windshield has no letters or symbols. Wind shield has a very small chip in it, not very noticeable). Tires matching and in good shape with at least 50% tread inches of tread. Original owners manual that is pretty wasted. Original set of keys. Door locks work with key. Heater works. Carpets are in good shape. Emergency brake works. Release mechanisms for the front boot, engine compartment and fuel filler lids all work well. Doors open and close properly. Door windows roll up and down properly. Rear windows swing out and in, and latch properly. Most window rubber is in good condition, some cracking. Blaupunkt radio with 2 AM, 1 SW, and 2 FM buttons. Glove box is excellent. Seatbelts. Clear Oregon title in my name. Not so good things: Engine smokes a little when first started and then cleans up. Rust can be seen in the photos at corner of windows and in bumpers, some of the paint has small bubbles.Front boot hood does not stay up when opened, needs at least one piston replaced. Right rear quarter panel was replaced some years ago and paint is slightly oxidized. Engine compartment is missing some of the fire wall insulation due to the replacement of the right rear quarter. Hood emblem was removed and is in a box, see photos. Wheels are pitted aluminum but cool looking. Dash padding over speaker has been damaged possibly by mice, see photos. Locking portion of the ignition switch is missing, I start it with a screw driver, see the little stubby screwdriver laying on the open ashtray in one photo. Driver’s seat has torn threads, other seats pretty nice.Buyer is responsible for shipping or pick up. $500 non-refundable deposit due within 48 hours of close of auction via PayPal or cash. Porsche close to fix for 911 GT3 engine fires
Sun, 16 Mar 2014It looks like 2014 Porsche 911 GT3 drivers might actually get to drive their cars again soon. Reports of fires affecting the track-ready Germans first began about a month ago. Then, a few days later, the automaker confirmed two of the five alleged blazes and said owners shouldn't drive their cars until further notice. Porsche then went so far as to offer to pick up the GT3s and transport them to the nearest dealer until the problem was identified and a fix was found. Finally, there appears to be a repair.
"We know the reason and the problem-solving measures. We're testing them," said Porsche CEO Matthias Müller to Bloomberg. The technical fix will be released to owners shortly.
The recall affects all 785 GT3s that have been sold so far, but there have been no reported injuries caused by the fires. When it first announced the safety campaign, Porsche said: "Internal studies to determine the cause of the engine damage have not been completed yet."
Porsche undecided on new 911 GT2 [w/poll]
Thu, 23 Jan 2014Fans of hardcore 911s had it pretty good with the last 997 generation. There was the GT3, GT3 RS, GT3 RS 4.0, GT2 and GT2 RS (pictured above). Each one was faster, more powerful and more expensive than the one below it, but what they all shared was what Porsche purists love most: rear engine, rear drive, a manual transmission and little else.
So far with the new 991, Porsche has only released a GT3 version. Sure, there have been other models, but they're all decidedly more luxurious and less performance-focused. And as impressive a machine as the new GT3 is, it has run the risk of alienating some of its most ardent fanatics with technological interference in the form of a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and four-wheel steering. So what those purists have really been looking forward to is a more hardcore GT3 RS or new GT2. But those may not be coming so quickly.
Speaking with 911 project chief August Achleitner, Car and Driver reports that a new GT2 is anything but a foregone conclusion. The reasons may be partially political, but could be technical in nature as well: with 560 horsepower driving all four wheels, the new 911 Turbo S runs the 0-60 in less than three seconds. Give it more power but less traction, as Porsche has done with past GT2s, and you may not end up seeing an actual improvement in performance. A GT2 that's slower than the Turbo S would be difficult to explain.
China bans military license plates on luxury autos
Wed, 01 May 2013Driving a vehicle with a military license plate in China provides many privileges. Legally reserved for official vehicles only, the designation apparently allows drivers to enjoy special liberties on the roads, including breaking traffic laws, filling up with free fuel and receiving light-and-siren escorts through congested cities. So attractive are the benefits that there is a secondary market for used legal and counterfeit plates - especially among those wealthy enough to afford luxury cars. But all of that is reportedly coming to an end, as President Xi Jinping, chairman of the Central Military Commission, is on a mission to fight corruption in his country.
A new license plate system goes into effect today, and it is designed to "maintain social harmony, stability and the reputation of the military," says the PLA Daily, the armed forces' official newspaper. While the abuse has been going on for many years, the internet has put the spotlight on the bad behavior, and the negative press does not represent the morals and true colors of the armed forces, say officials.
While military-plated Porsche drivers have been singled out as offenders, Bloomberg notes that all vehicles with engine displacements above 3.0 liters and with a sticker price in excess of about $73,000, will be banned from receiving military plates. This includes vehicles from Audi, Cadillac, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln and the Volkswagen Phaeton. Even if drivers are savvy enough to circumvent the new issuing system, the military has put technology at toll gates to catch users of counterfeit plates. There has been no word on the punishment if caught.
